CAN condemns FIRS controversial Easter message, want retraction, apology
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a statement expressing deep concern over a controversial Easter message released by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), eliciting significant public outcry among Christians.
In the statement signed by Prophet Commodore Abimbola Ayuba (rtd), the National Director of National Issues and Social Welfare for CAN, the organization underscored the importance of respecting religious sentiments and promoting national unity.
CAN emphasized that the Easter period is a time of solemn reflection and sacred observance for Christians, and messages from public institutions should not trivialize or mock core religious beliefs.
“The analogy drawn by the FIRS between the Christian doctrine of redemption and the civic duty of tax payment was offensive and derogatory,” the Christian body noted.
CAN asserted that the execution of the message crossed cultural and religious boundaries, causing distress and indignation.
In response to the incident, CAN called upon the management of the FIRS to retract the message and issue a public apology for the distress caused.
The organization also urged public and private organizations to exercise caution and consideration for the diverse religious backgrounds of society.
Meanwhile, the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has urged President Bola Tinubu to intensify efforts to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.
YOWICAN expressed concern over the escalating cost of living, leading to widespread hunger and suffering among the populace.
The group also denounced the nation’s growing level of insecurity, bringing attention in particular to recent assaults on Christians in the state of Plateau and other areas.
