Bwala to Peter Obi: Running as VP in 2027 Would Be a Political Mistake

Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy, has cautioned Labour Party leader Peter Obi against accepting a vice presidential candidacy in the 2027 elections, warning that it could erode his strong support base.

During an interview on Channels Television, Bwala argued that Obi’s followers, known as the “Obidients,” are loyal to him as a presidential candidate—not as a deputy. He stated that stepping down to a running mate role would be a major political blunder.

Obi, who was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2019 under the PDP, contested as Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, gaining significant youth backing. Recent discussions suggest he may join an opposition coalition proposed by Atiku to challenge the ruling party in 2027.

However, Bwala insisted that such a move would backfire. “Peter Obi will be making the biggest mistake of his life to agree to be a running mate,” he said. “His supporters only pledged loyalty to him as a presidential candidate. The moment he abandons that ambition, he’ll lose most of his followers.”

Bwala also dismissed the opposition coalition’s chances, claiming it was “dead on arrival” as key figures from opposition parties were defecting to Tinubu’s camp. He praised the president’s political strength, stating that no rival could realistically defeat him in 2027.

“President Tinubu has unmatched political influence. Governors, senators, and party structures are aligning with him. The opposition’s coalition lacks the momentum to succeed,” Bwala added.
