Bandits, Boko Haram killed over 2,295 teachers since 2009, says NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has revealed that more than 2,295 teachers have been killed across Nigeria by bandits and Boko Haram insurgents since 2009, with over 19,000 displaced in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

The figures were announced during a nationwide protest at the NLC headquarters in Abuja against the worsening insecurity in the country. The organized labor also presented ten measures to the federal government to address the security crisis.

Addressing workers, NLC Deputy General Secretary Ishmail Bello urged the government to urgently secure schools and protect students and teachers. “All the government needs to do is to bring all the powers and the machinery of governance to ensure that all the ungoverned spaces in our country are recovered immediately,” he stated.

Bello highlighted the broader impact of insecurity, noting that millions have been displaced, farmers extorted or driven from their lands, and livelihoods destroyed.

Health workers, local government staff, and traders have also been severely affected, he added.

Among its recommendations, the NLC called for making Chapter Two of the 1999 Constitution justiciable; convening a Citizens’ Dialogue to shape constitutional reforms; and establishing transparent Security Trust Funds at all government levels to improve intelligence, recruitment, welfare, and equipment for security personnel.

The NLC stressed that without decisive action, the nation’s education system, economy, and social stability will continue to deteriorate.
