APC sweeps four Chairmanship seats in FCT Council polls as INEC announces results

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured victory in four out of six area council chairmanship seats following the local government election conducted in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Results announced on Sunday from the elections held across the six area councils—AMAC, Bwari, Kwali, Abaji, Gwagwalada, and Kuje—showed a dominant performance by the ruling party.

In the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), the incumbent chairman, Christopher Maikalangu of the APC, was reelected after a decisive win. The Collation Officer for AMAC, Prof. Andrew Abue, confirmed that Maikalangu polled 40,295 votes to defeat his closest rivals. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate came second with 12,109 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) garnered 3,398 votes. Prof. Abue noted that out of 837,338 registered voters in the council, 65,676 were accredited, with a total of 65,197 votes cast. Valid votes totaled 62,861, with 2,336 rejected.

In Bwari Area Council, Joshua Ishaku of the APC emerged victorious. The Returning Officer, Prof. Mohammed Nurudeen, announced that Ishaku secured 18,466 votes. He was followed by the ADC candidate with 4,254 votes and the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) candidate with 3,515 votes. The election was conducted across the council’s ten wards.

The APC also claimed victory in Kwali Area Council, where Daniel Nuhu won the chairmanship seat with 17,032 votes, defeating his closest rival, Haruna Pai of the PDP, who polled 8,575 votes.

Similarly, in Abaji Area Council, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC was declared the winner. The INEC Presiding Officer announced that Abubakar secured 15,535 votes. His closest challenger from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) polled 5,357 votes, while the PDP followed with 4,547 votes.

With these results, the APC has so far secured chairmanship seats in Bwari, AMAC, Abaji, and Kwali. The PDP has been declared the winner in Gwagwalada Area Council. Officials are currently collating results from Kuje Area Council, with an announcement expected imminently.
