Another Oyo monarch, Onijeru of Ijeru land, Oba Elijah Olaniyi Popoola, is dead

Another traditional ruler in Oyo State, the Onijeru of Ijeru land, Oba Elijah Olaniyi Popoola, is dead.

The Onijeru of Ijeru land in Ogbomoso South Local government area of the state, Oba Ellijah Olaniyi Popoola, died on Friday at the age of 85 during a brief illness.

The monarch ascended the throne in the year 2008.

Oba Popoola’s death comes after the death of some seven prominent traditional rulers in the state, including the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Adetunji, Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ajagungbade, and Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.

The Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Jimoh Oyewumi joined his ancestors on December 12, 2021.

On December 21, 2021, the Asigangan of Igangan, in Ibarapa North local government area Oba Lasisi Adeoye Lawuyi Aribiyan, has joined his ancestors.

Also, the 41st Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji also joined his ancestors on January 2nd 2022 at the age of 93.

On April 8, 2022, the Onikoyi of Ikoyi-Ile, in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state, Oba Abdulyekeen Ayinla Oladipupo, Also died.

The 45th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi also on 23 April this year joined his ancestors at the age of 83.

Also, among the dead monarchs in the last six months in the state is the Onigbeti of Igbeti land, Oba Emmanuel Oyekan Oyebisi, Afasegbejo III who joined his ancestors at the age of 77 on November 7, 2021.
