Anambra denies arrest order on braless, pantless ladies

Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has given an explanation on the state’s plan to arrest ladies caught without bras or pants in public.

The governor’s reaction is coming after some sections of the Nigerian news media reported that operatives of the Anambra Government-backed Agunechemba Security Outfit would arrest ladies without bras or pants.

Indeed, a town crier in Abagana community in Njikoka Local Government Area in a video warned that as part of the ongoing efforts in curbing criminality, that  besides arresting native doctors, ladies who move around the community without pants and bras would also be arrested.

The video, which trended on the social media, was initially denied by the Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor.

However, Senior Special Adviser on New Media, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, said: “The trending announcement by the town crier in Abagana, Njikoka LGA, wherein the announcer stated that ladies who move about without underwears (bras and pants) would be arrested, is not from the State government nor Agunechemba Security Outfit.

“Such trivial matters do not have any legal support and cannot be the focus of the State government or its law enforcement agencies. At this time, it is focused on ridding the State of every form of criminality. While this is not to encourage indecent dressing in our communities, it is important to make this clarification so as not to derail the focus of our law enforcement under any pretext.

“Kindly disregard any such distracting announcement and remember to continue supporting the Security Agencies with credible information on criminals around our communities — if you see something, say something!”

The clarification by the governor’s aide expectedly will allay fears by ladies who go about without pants and bras in Anambra State and calm the frayed nerves in sections of Nigerian news and social media.
