Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN)

Amupitan assumes duty as INEC chairman today

Professor Joash Amupitan will officially assume duties as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), today, October 23, 2025, in Abuja.

A statement by INEC’s Deputy Director of Publicity, Wilfred Ifogah, stated that upon resumption, Prof Amupitan will hold an inaugural meeting with all the directors.

A major assignment of the new INEC chairman is the conduct of Anambra Governorship election scheduled on the 8th of next month.

About two weeks ago, the National Council of State approved the nomination of Professor Amupitan (SAN) from the North-Central zone as the new Chairman of INEC.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented Amupitan’s name to the council to fill the vacancy created by the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who served from 2015 until October 2025.

President Tinubu noted that Amupitan is the first person from Kogi State, in the North-Central region, to be nominated for the position, describing him as a distinguished scholar and apolitical figure.

Immediately, the Senate confirmed Prof Amupitan as the new INEC Chairman, following a rigorous screening session on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja.

He succeeds Prof Mahmood Yakubu, who has completed his tenure as the commission’s Chairman.

During his screening, the new INEC boss assured lawmakers of his commitment to restoring public trust and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral process, pledging to review the Electoral Act and introduce reforms that will strengthen election administration and improve transparency.
