Alleged assault: Rep Alex Ikwechegh arraigned, gets bail
The House of Representatives member for Aba North and South, Alex Ikwechegh, who assaulted a cab driver has.been granted bail by a Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, in the sum of ₦500,000 and two sureties in like sum.
The presiding Judge, Abubakar Sai’id, said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and provide utility bills as proof of evidence.
The lawmaker was charged with abuse of office, assault, and threat to life.
When the charges were read to bim, he pleaded not guilty, and his counsel, thereafter, made an oral application for bail which was granted by the court.
The case has been adjourned to November 8, 2024.
Hon. Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House, was charged for assaulting Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver, during the delivery of a package to the lawmaker in Maitama area of Abuja.
A hot exchange had ensued between the lawmaker and the cab driver, Abuwatseya, during the delivery of a package, which resulted in the lawmaker assaulting the cab driver, threatening that he could make him disappear from Nigeria.
