Senator Ademola Adeleke has emerged the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for the September 22, 2018 Osun State governorship election.
Adeleke, a serving Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District in the Senate, scored 1,569 votes to defeat Akin Ogunbiyi with 1,562 votes who came second. Others candidates who contested in the governorship primary were: Alhaji Fatati Akinbade, former Secretary to the State Government, SSG, under ex-Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, scored 56 votes, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Nathaniel Oke scored three votes.
The Chairman of the PDP National Election Committee Chairman, Governor Seriake Dickson, announced the results of the primary election on Saturday, July 21, 2018, by 10:45pm in the state capital, Osogbo.
He said there were 3448 delegates expected for the election, with 3246 delegates turning up.
The governor said the election was peaceful as it was a contest among brothers. However, he said any aggrieved contestant can still appeal to the National Working Committee, NWC, of the PDP for adjudication on such appeal.
Voting counting in the election was supervised by the former Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Babangida Aliyu.
Indeed, Adeleke was elected Senator on July 9, 2017, after his brother, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, who occupied the seat died while serving. Adeleke is to face the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Alhaji Gboyega Oyebola in the September 22, 2018 governorship election. Oyebola is incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s Chief of Staff.
Another candidate in the governorship election is former Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
