Adamawa Gov. Fintiri dumps PDP, joins APC, citing need to align with Tinubu’s agenda
Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Governor completed his registration at Wuro Ngayandi Ward in Madagali Local Government Area on Thursday.
After receiving the APC broom and displaying it to the crowd, Fintiri urged the people of Adamawa to follow suit by joining the party in all 226 wards across the state.
The Governor described the move as a strategic decision made after extensive consultations, aimed at aligning Adamawa State with the mainstream of national politics.
“Recent events in the polity demand that we take decisive and strategic decisions. After wide consultations with a large spectrum of our people, we have resolved to politically align Adamawa State with the APC,” the Governor declared.
He explained that this alignment would enable the state to effectively support and leverage the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in the areas of social welfare, infrastructure, housing, and inclusive economic development.
Fintiri, who secured his mandate in the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections under the PDP banner, reassured citizens of his commitment to the trust they placed in him.
He highlighted his administration’s achievements, including bolstering security, constructing roads, schools, hospitals, and markets, as well as empowering youths and women. He also pointed to the creation of new chiefdoms, emirates, and districts as evidence of his commitment to inclusion and cohesion.
The Governor was keen to stress that his decision to leave the PDP was not personal or convenient, but was guided by a singular focus on “the long-term stability, development, and prosperity of Adamawa State.”
Declaring that “the years of sideline politics are over,” Fintiri stated that Adamawa was returning to the mainstream to secure greater opportunities and national relevance.
He assured supporters that the move to the APC would be a collective one, involving all 226 wards, 21 local government areas, and all elected and appointed officials, along with the state’s entire political machinery.
Calling for a massive registration drive in the APC, the Governor pledged to continue delivering democratic dividends, including infrastructure, job creation, scholarships, and empowerment programmes.
“This is more than a promise. It is a sacred covenant,” Fintiri declared, urging citizens to trust that this new political direction represents “the best place to go” for the state’s future.
Following the defection, several Adamawa State commissioners, speaking through Aloysius Babadoke, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, voiced their unwavering support for the Governor, citing his excellent leadership.
They affirmed their commitment to standing by him regardless of his political choices.
However, political observers noted the conspicuous absence of Commissioner Adamu Atiku Abubakar from the group that joined the Governor in the APC. Speculation is rife that Abubakar may be following his father, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
