Atiku’s resignation letter

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the party.

His resignation is a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape as alignments for the 2027 general elections continue.

In a resignation letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku cited the party’s deviation from its founding principles and irreconcilable internal conflicts as reasons for his exit.

The letter, confirmed by his media aide and shared online, has been acknowledged as received.

Atiku’s departure follows his active involvement in forming a new opposition coalition, the Alliance Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is now a key figure. Speculations suggest he may seek the ADC’s presidential ticket for the 2027 polls.

This is not the first time Atiku has left the PDP. He previously defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014 before returning to contest the 2023 election under the PDP, where he finished as runner-up.

Meanwhile, former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, reacted to Atiku’s exit with a cryptic social media post, joking, “Waziri; When the Admin left the group.”

The PDP has yet to issue an official statement regarding Atiku’s resignation.

His move signals a potential realignment of opposition forces ahead of the next general elections.
