Counting is ongoing as voting has ended in the Lagos State Local Government Election slated for today, July 12, 2025.

According to reports from The Nation, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in both the Chairmanship and Councillorship elections held at the Oba Elegushi Palace polling unit.

According to results released by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) official, a total of 10,812 voters were registered at the polling unit. However, only 3,741 voters turned out to cast their ballots.

The APC secured a commanding lead, polling 3,655 votes in both the Chairmanship and Councillorship categories. The Youth Party (YP) polled 31 votes, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 20 votes,  the Labour Party (LP) garnered 12 votes, the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) got 8 votes, while a total of 41 votes were declared void.

The LASIEC presiding officer at the unit, Mrs. Joke Ogindipe, described the exercise as smooth and peaceful.

She said: “It was successful and peaceful. From the results and the number of voters, you will agree with me that it was peaceful. Although people who didn’t come to vote might have stayed away out of fear, I believe those who participated can testify that it was smooth. There was adequate security presence everywhere.”

Some voters who spoke to the Nation expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the election, though they acknowledged the low turnout.

Mr. Adewale Salako, noted that the presence of security personnel gave him confidence to participate. “I was initially worried about safety, but when I saw police and other security men around, I felt safe. I voted because I believe it starts from the grassroots,” he said.

Despite the low turnout, the atmosphere at the Oba Elegushi Palace polling unit remained calm throughout the day, with electoral officers conducting the process in an orderly manner.

Collation of results at PU 009 has just been concluded. The APC stalwart, James Odunmbaku, aka “Baba Eto” has delivered his PU 009 in Budland, Ojodu LCDA for his party. The incumbent Chairman of Ojodu LCDA, David, is Odunmbaku’s son.

The APC polled 380 in the Chairmanship contest, while the PDP polled 04.

In the Councilorship race, the APC coasted home to victory with 368 votes while the PDP got 16 votes.

The lawmaker representing Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. James Faleke, on Saturday delivered his polling unit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the ongoing local government elections in Lagos State.

Faleke voted at Polling Unit 021, located at Olaleke Taiwo/Morgan Junction in Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where the APC secured an overwhelming majority in both the chairmanship and councillorship elections.

At the end of voting, results declared showed that the APC polled 162 votes in the chairmanship race, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed just 2 votes. The councillorship election was even more decisive, with the APC scoring 163 votes and the PDP getting only 1. There were no void votes in either contest.

Faleke expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of voters and the professionalism displayed by security personnel at the polling unit. However, he criticized the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for logistical lapses, saying electoral officials did not arrive at the polling unit until well after midday.

“I commend the voters for their patience and peaceful disposition. But LASIEC must do better. Elections should not start this late,” Faleke said.

A visit to other polling units within Ojodu LCDA showed similar patterns, with the APC coasting to victory in all the units monitored. The exercise was generally peaceful, with concerns over voter apathy.

At Polling Unit 062 (Yakoyo Market), the APC won the chairmanship race with 49 votes, while the PDP got none. Two votes were voided. For councillorship, APC secured 50 votes with one voided ballot.

Polling Unit 009 (Yakoyo Junction) recorded 88 votes for APC and 3 for PDP in the chairmanship contest, with 7 void votes. The councillorship race saw APC polling 87 votes to PDP’s 4, with another 7 voided ballots.

In PU 087 (Olaleke Taiwo), the APC won both elections convincingly, scoring 14 votes in the chairmanship and 14 in the councillorship race. The PDP recorded no votes in either contest, and there were no voided ballots.

At PU 086 (middle of Olaleke Taiwo), the APC secured 10 votes in both the chairmanship and councillorship elections, with PDP scoring zero. There were no voided votes.

Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Usman Hamzat emerged winner at Polling Unit 027, Ward C1, College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, where he cast his vote, in yesterday’s local government election.

Jubilant scenes erupted at the polling unit after Presiding Officer, Kareem Aderonke declared Hamzat winner with 335 votes out of 336 valid votes cast among 848 registered voters.

Labour Party (LP) candidate Adedayo Ashade secured one vote, while People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Michael Oloyede recorded no votes.

Voting in Ifako-Ijaiye commenced late, as officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) began arriving only at 9:28 a.m., delaying accreditation and voting despite the early turnout of voters from 8 a.m.

Hamzat cast his vote at 10:12 a.m. after arriving at the polling unit with his family at 10:10 a.m.

He expressed confidence in victory despite the late arrival of LASIEC officials.

Speaking after his declaration, Hamzat described voter turnout at his polling unit as satisfactory.

He said voter education had been sufficient despite perceptions to the contrary.

“Well, it’s on the average. If you look at my polling unit now, we have well over 300 voters who came out to vote there. So for me, it’s okay on the average.”

He added that people are generally interested in participating in governance and attributed low participation in some areas to misplaced voter cards and citisens’ perception of local government elections as less important.

“Generally, there’s always a vote in our party, the country generally. People are always interested in being a part of the system and all that. For them saying there is no information or that there was not really much sensitisation on it, I don’t think that is true because I know vividly that INEC and LASIEC organised a lot of sensitisation programmes and engagement with the communities like the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Muslim community, and the youth.

“So, I think some people, a lot of our people, have misplaced their voter cards. Most of them feel because they’ve misplaced it, they cannot vote. I think that’s the major problem. And the fact that people always believe local government is just a local thing and all that, so a lot of our people are not always interested in coming out to discharge their civic responsibility.

“It’s just like when the government said we should register for our NIN and all that; people didn’t go for it. But when they saw that it was going to affect them, they started rushing it. So that’s our system in the country, which is a very bad thing.

“So for me, it’s just the nature of our people. I would just advise that it’s always very important for our people to come out to discharge their civic responsibility by electing into offices their leaders. So that’s my advice to our people,” he said.

On whether full local government autonomy would affect council performance, Hamzat noted that Lagos State local governments already enjoy full autonomy and are performing well.

He said: “Well, first and foremost, since I assumed office, Lagos State local governments have full autonomy. Our funds are always released to us. So for me, and that is why it is majorly in Lagos State that local governments are doing wonderfully well and performing.

“Just recently, we saw a lot of local government chairmen commissioning state-of-the-art public health centres, commissioning road projects and all that. For me, I don’t see it affecting it or anything, but it’s just the people that are not always interested in doing things right. That’s my view about it.”

Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government and APC vice chairmanship candidate Oluwatoyin Awoniyi-Akerele described the election as peaceful and expressed optimism about their re-election.

Awoniyi-Akerele arrived at Polling Unit 023, Ward B, at 11:08 a.m. and voted at 11:23 a.m. She commended the peaceful conduct of the exercise, stating that people were coming out gradually and that all party agents were cooperating.

She said the APC was confident of re-election, having performed well for the community, and assured residents that the administration would continue its good work to deliver the dividends of democracy.

The Executive Chairman of Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Olasoju Adebayo, recorded a decisive victory at Polling Unit 023, located at 4 Holy Saviour Street, Isolo, during Saturday’s Chairmanship election.

Adebayo, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), polled 54 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 3 votes. The Labour Party (LP) recorded no votes, and there were no invalid ballots.

Out of 68 registered voters at the unit, a total of 57 persons cast their votes, reflecting a high turnout for the unit.

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila has exercised his fanchise by voting in the ongoing Lagos State Local Government Election.

Gbajabiamila voted at his polling unit situated at Elizabeth Fowler Nursery and Primary School in Surulere, Lagos.

Addressing journalists, he said: “It’s a welcome development with the coalition. It’s not the first time we’re seeing this. It’s a welcome development. In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition otherwise we’ll run into a one-party state. But I’m not sure where it would go.

“The local government is crucial in any democracy. If the local government system is as effective as desired by the President, it should be the closest to the people at the grassroots, addressing their basic needs.

“On the formation of a coalition, it’s healthy for democracy to have opposition and I am not sure they can go far in achieving their target as the President’s performance towers high.”

Senator representing Lagos East, Adetokunbo Abiru has lauded the conduct of the local government election.

Sen. Abiru who voted at about 10.30 a.m. at Ward E Unit 11, Ijomu, Ikorodu alongside his wife , Mrs. Feyisola Abiru described the election as peaceful and rancour free.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commended the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) for the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections.

Sanwo-Olu, who cast his vote alongside his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, at Ward E3, Polling Unit 006 in Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island, described the voting process as well-coordinated.

Speaking with reporters after voting, Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that preliminary reports from various parts of the state indicated a smooth and peaceful exercise, with no major incidents recorded.

He urged residents who were yet to perform their civic right to come out and do so, “I encourage everyone who has not voted to go out and cast their vote. This is how we build the kind of leadership we want at the local level,” the governor said.

Explaining further, the governor said, election is not just a constitutiinal process, it is a powerful experession of people’s voice and civic reponsibility

The Governor also used the opportunity to reaffirm the autonomy of local governments in Lagos, stating that they have continued to operate independently.

“In Lagos State, our local governments have been truly independent. They are not just symbolic; They play a central role in delivering services and responding directly to the needs of the people,” he affirmed.

On the issue of security, the governor said he has ahead of the election, directed that security agencies be strategically deployed across all polling units and communities.

He expressed satisfaction with the deployment of security personnel across the state, saying their presence helped to protect voters, electoral officials, electoral materials and also help to maintain peace and order at various polling units and communities.
