NCC Highlights Vital Role of Telecoms in National Security, Vows to Prosecute Infrastructure Vandals

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has highlighted the critical importance of telecom services in ensuring national security, particularly in situations requiring effective communication.
NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Aminu Maida, who spoke during an interactive session with the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA) in Abuja on Thursday, said national security cannot be achieved without a functional telecommunication system.
Maida, who was represented by Nnena Ukoha, Head of NCC’s Corporate Communications, said the commission is collaborating with security agencies to arrest and prosecute vandals of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII).
“Anyone found guilty of damaging or disrupting CNII will face prosecution,” he said. “We are partnering with agencies like the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address these challenges and ensure offenders are held accountable.”
Maida emphasized on the necessity of safeguarding telecom infrastructure, noting its importance to service delivery and socio-economic activities.
“Telecom services are now integral to all sectors of the economy. If infrastructure is compromised, it will disrupt vital socio-economic operations,” he said.
He stressed that stable telecom infrastructure is crucial for national security, especially amid rising cyber threats and vulnerabilities.
According to him, telecom services play a key role in public welfare by supporting digital society growth and enabling access to essential services.
Earlier, NITRA President Blessing Olaifa expressed optimism for stronger collaboration between NCC and the media to enhance public awareness and engagement.
