A DNA matching is being done for victims of the Indian plane crash, Times of India reports.

The Gujarat state government, which is conducting intensive rescue and relief operations, has established 80 DNA matches for victims and 33 mortal remains handed over.

Over 855 health personnel are deployed. Air India confirmed contact with all next of kin, with over 400 family members now in Ahmedabad receiving assistance, including free air travel arrangements.

At Kaushoti Bhavan in D Block, the process began with meticulous DNA sampling and verification, a significant improvement over older, less organised documentation methods.

This step ensures accurate identification of the deceased before further procedures are initiated.

Once verified, the postmortem room takes over, preparing remains with precision and care.

While the postmortem room operates, relatives are supported in a dedicated waiting room, where counsellors and public relations officers provide emotional and logistical assistance. After procedures are complete, families are escorted with arranged transportation to receive the mortal remains, ensuring a respectful handover.

Civil Hospital’s integrated approach, from Kaushoti Bhavan’s documentation to the postmortem room’s efficiency and compassionate dispatch, sets a standard for handling sensitive processes with professionalism and empathy.

Nodal Officer, Civil Hospital, Arvind Vijayan explains the process, “After receiving the DNA reports, the verification centre in D2 block of Civil Hospital has been activated, located in front of the Medical Superintendent’s office. When relatives arrive to collect the remains, verification is conducted there. After verification, the report is sent to the post-mortem room, and the procedure is initiated. Until then, the relatives are seated in the waiting room with a counsellor and the medical team.”

Collectors of the respective districts have reached out to the families of the victims of the plane crash. To ensure the smooth and timely disbursement of insurance and compensation claims to the legal heirs, district-level accounting officers and other designated officials have been appointed as Nodal Officers. The district administration is extending full support and assistance to the affected families throughout this process.

To simplify the insurance claim process for those impacted by the plane crash, a Joint Cell has been directed to be set up at the hospital as per IRDAI’s notification. New India Assurance has been designated as the lead insurer on behalf of the General Insurance Council, while HDFC Life has been appointed as the lead insurer for the Life Insurance Council.

With support from the district administration, help desks of New India Assurance, HDFC Life Insurance, and LIC have been established at the Civil Hospital. These desks are facilitating the prompt and efficient processing of insurance claims for deceased passengers and other affected individuals, while also offering them necessary guidance.

Furthermore, the nodal officer details of the respective insurance companies are being provided to the victim families.Efforts are also underway by the district administration to assist insurance companies with necessary information, including the passenger list, to expedite claim processing.
