NCC Commissions Landmark E-Health Project in Ondo, Boost  Nigeria’s Digital Healthcare

Nigeria’s telecommunications regulator, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has launched a groundbreaking e-health initiative at the State Specialist Hospital in Akure, Ondo State, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to digitize public healthcare services.

At the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, May 29, 2025, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, hailed the project as a pivotal move toward integrating the health sector into Nigeria’s expanding digital economy.

“Today’s event reflects our shared commitment to leveraging technology to revolutionize healthcare delivery,” Maida stated. “This initiative not only enhances medical services through digital solutions but also ensures a healthier population that can actively participate in the digital economy.”

Developed in collaboration with technology providers and government stakeholders, the project equips the hospital with advanced digital infrastructure to improve patient care, streamline diagnostics, and modernize health records management. It aligns with Nigeria’s broader strategy to digitize public services and bridge the healthcare gap between urban and rural areas.

The new system will enable healthcare professionals at the Akure facility to deliver faster, more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans, significantly improving patient outcomes and hospital efficiency.

“This project transcends the confines of this hospital—it sets a benchmark for innovation, partnership, and impactful investment,” Maida emphasized. “We believe this model can be replicated nationwide to transform healthcare delivery.”

He credited the project’s success to the collaboration of diverse stakeholders, including government agencies and technical experts, and praised their dedication to advancing inclusive, tech-driven healthcare in Nigeria.

The NCC, a key driver of Nigeria’s digital transformation, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting e-health innovations as part of its mandate to promote ICT adoption across critical sectors.

“This achievement underscores the power of strategic partnerships,” Maida added. “We are excited to expand such initiatives across the country.”

The event was attended by state officials, healthcare providers, ICT experts, and local community members.
