Pakistan PM vows to ‘avenge’ victims of India’s attack

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says “we will avenge the blood of our innocent martyrs” after at least 31 people were reported killed and dozens wounded in India’s attack on Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Heavy exchanges of artillery fire have been reported along the Line of Control dividing Indian- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Al Jazeera reports.

India says at least 13 people have been killed and more wounded in Indian-administered Kashmir due to Pakistani fire.

India says “Operation Sindoor” targeted “terrorist” infrastructure; Pakistan says missiles hit mosques and killed civilians in a blatant “act of war”.

Tensions have been escalating between the two nuclear-armed countries since a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 , which India blamed on Pakistan. Pakistan has denied any involvement.

In New Delhi, Indian officials briefed more than a dozen foreign envoys, telling them: “If Pakistan responds, India will respond”.

It comes amid spiralling tensions following a deadly attack last month on Hindu tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blamed on Pakistan-based fighters. Islamabad has denied any involvement.

India’s government said its forces targeted nine sites it described as “terrorist infrastructure”, including facilities allegedly linked to the fighters who killed 25 tourists and one local in last month’s Kashmir attack.
