Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, has been widely applauded after a video of his unexpected early-morning visit to street sweepers went viral online.

The footage, which has sparked discussions across West Africa, shows the 36-year-old leader dressed in military khaki with a pistol in his pocket, walking the streets around 5 a.m. to personally thank the cleaners for their service to the nation.

Traoré’s unannounced appearance was meant to encourage and honor the workers for their efforts in maintaining the capital’s cleanliness—a gesture celebrated by many as “humble” and a display of “exemplary leadership.”

The clip quickly gained momentum on social media, particularly among Nigerian users, who flooded the comments with mixed reactions of admiration and frustration.
Many contrasted Traoré’s hands-on approach with the perceived detachment of their own leaders.

“Even a local government chairman in Nigeria wouldn’t do this,” one user remarked. Another added, “This is real leadership—not staged photo-ops in bulletproof cars.”

@vincent commented: “Meanwhile, Kenya’s President Ruto is busy chasing clout—showing up at events just to cut ribbons for tap water projects.”

Since rising to power in a 2022 military coup, the young Burkinabé leader has grown in popularity across Africa for his nationalist stance and grassroots-focused governance.

The video continues to trend, with many Africans urging their leaders to follow Traoré’s example of simplicity and genuine public engagement.
