Former NNPC CEO, Mele Kyari, Denies EFCC Custody Rumours, Calls Them “Mischief”

Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed widespread rumours claiming he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). He described the reports as “clear mischief” and a “calculated attempt” to tarnish his reputation.
In a late-night statement on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, Kyari clarified that he is currently on a “well-deserved rest” following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management by President Bola Tinubu. He reiterated his readiness to cooperate with any lawful inquiry into his tenure.
Kyari expressed frustration over the false reports, stating that he had been flooded with calls from concerned family and friends. He accused the online newspaper behind the claim of spreading disinformation with undisclosed motives.
The former NNPC boss, who served the company for 34 years—including nearly six as CEO—maintained that his record speaks for itself, emphasizing his commitment to transparency and accountability.
“As a Muslim, I served with the fear of God, knowing that even if I do not account before man, I will account before Allah. I am happy to answer for my stewardship in this world,” he stated.
Kyari urged the media to act responsibly, warning that spreading unverified claims could harm Nigeria’s reputation and deter international investors.
He thanked those who reached out to him and assured them of his willingness to respond to any legitimate inquiries regarding his time in office.
President Tinubu had removed Kyari and NNPCL Chairman Pius Akinyelure in April, appointing Bashir Ojulari as the new CEO effective April 2, 2025.
