The Federal Government has announced a 20-day total closure of the Ijora Bridge, also known as the Marine Bridge, in Lagos State, starting Sunday, April 27, 2025, for essential structural repairs.

Olukorede Kesha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, disclosed this during an appearance on *Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily*. She explained that the repairs are necessary due to damaged bearings beneath the bridge deck.

Kesha clarified that only a specific section of the bridge—connecting commuters from Ido or Eko Bridge toward Apapa via Carter Bridge—will be shut down. “This is the route from the Island that links to Carter Bridge for access to Apapa,” she stated.

The repair work will be carried out in three phases. The first phase, requiring a full 20-day closure, affects the bridge’s initial section. The middle section will have traffic diversions instead of a complete shutdown, while the final phase will involve merging lanes for continued repairs.

Kesha acknowledged that the closure may cause disruptions, especially since the bridge serves as a major route to Apapa, home to Nigeria’s busiest seaports. However, she emphasized that the repairs are critical for public safety and assured that diversion plans and traffic management strategies are in place.

Responding to concerns about vibrations on the bridge, Kesha reassured the public that the structure is not at risk of collapse and urged road users to exercise patience during the repair period.
