Agbakoba Contradictions  in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan Sexual Harassment Claim

Former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president Olisa Agbakoba has described the sexual harassment allegation by suspended Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio as flawed, citing “significant contradictions” and stating that it fails to meet the global standard of proof for such claims.

Speaking at a Lagos press conference on Tuesday, Agbakoba, who is also Akpabio’s legal representative, stressed that while society should encourage victims to speak out, justice must be based on evidence and fairness.

“In an ideal world, victims should feel safe to come forward,” he said. “However, the principles of justice—rooted in evidence and impartiality—must always prevail.”

Agbakoba disclosed that he had written to Akpoti-Uduaghan on Akpabio’s behalf, demanding clarification over inconsistencies in her allegations, which have garnered widespread media coverage.

“The extensive reporting has harmed our client’s reputation both locally and internationally,” the letter stated. “We are giving you reasonable time to address these contradictions, while our client reserves all legal rights.”

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) challenged the credibility of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s timeline, saying she publicly praised Akpabio just a day after the alleged harassment.

“She claims the incident occurred on December 8, 2023, yet on December 9, she posted glowing remarks about the Senate President on social media, commending an event she attended in Uyo,” Agbakoba noted. “This stark contrast between an alleged traumatic experience and voluntary public admiration raises serious questions.”

He also referenced Akpoti-Uduaghan’s past accusations against other public figures, including Reno Omokri and a former minister, suggesting a pattern that warrants scrutiny.

“Sexual harassment is a grave issue that demands thorough and impartial examination,” Agbakoba said. “While we respect the challenges faced by accusers, our review of public records reveals inconsistencies that must be addressed for a fair assessment.”

He said formal institutional processes, rather than media trials, are the appropriate avenue for resolving such serious allegations.
