Amaechi Claims Fubara-Wike Feud is About Money, Calls Tinubu’s Intervention Unconstitutional

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has alleged that the ongoing conflict between suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike is centered on financial disputes.
Speaking in an interview with DW Africa on Saturday, Amaechi criticized President Bola Tinubu’s intervention in the crisis, describing it as unconstitutional. He argued that Rivers State is currently the only region in Nigeria deprived of democratic governance.
“The dispute between the current governor and the FCT minister boils down to money sharing. If not, what exactly is their quarrel about?” Amaechi questioned. “Nigerians no longer seem to care about corruption. I haven’t seen anyone publicly demanding answers. Why can’t both parties explain the issue to the public?”
He further condemned the political situation in Rivers, stating, “Democracy has been taken away from us. Rivers State is under what feels like military rule, not democratic governance.”
Amaechi also challenged Tinubu’s approach, saying, “The President acted beyond his constitutional powers. Section 188 of the Constitution clearly outlines how a governor can exit office—through death, resignation, or impeachment. It doesn’t grant the President the authority to remove a governor arbitrarily, which undermines democracy.”
