Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 general elections, has clarified that the SDP has no plans to merge or collaborate with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other political party ahead of the 2027 elections.

Adebayo made this declaration during a meeting with the Ogun State executive members of the party in Abeokuta on Saturday.

Accompanied by former Sports Minister Solomon Dalung and party chairmen from Ogun, Oyo, and Lagos states, Adebayo dismissed claims that the SDP is an extension of the APC.

He emphasized that the SDP remains dedicated to the welfare and well-being of all Nigerians.

“Perhaps the APC has appendicitis; they should go to the hospital to treat it. We are a strong and independent party. We are older than any of the existing parties, and our mission is clear: we are not in government with them,” Adebayo stated.

He further highlighted his leadership of the party during the last election and affirmed that the SDP’s leadership structure remains intact.

“I led the party in the last election, and I’m still here. I’m not a minister under Tinubu. All our state chairmen, the national chairman, and the national secretary are still in place. We stand on our own,” he added.

Adebayo explained that the SDP’s focus on intellectual discourse and issue-based politics often leads to underestimation by others.

“Our party is a party of intellect. We are the only party that leans slightly to the left. Since our inception in 1989, we have remained committed to this ideology. The solutions to Nigeria’s problems lie in leftist policies, as outlined in Chapter Two of the Constitution—investing in education, housing, healthcare, and infrastructure to ensure Nigerians enjoy a life more abundant, as envisioned by Chief Obafemi Awolowo,” he said.

He also noted that while the SDP welcomes genuine new members, it remains cautious about admitting individuals with questionable character.

Ola Williams, the Ogun State chairman of the SDP, used the occasion to welcome new members into the party, reiterating the party’s commitment to its principles and values.
