Peter Obi Condemns Intimidation of NYSC Member Who Spoke Out on Hardship, Calls for Constructive Dialogue

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized the threats against National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, following her viral video highlighting the economic challenges faced by Nigerians.
Raye, who is serving in Lagos State, shared her struggles to afford basic necessities, sparking widespread attention on social media. However, her candid remarks were met with threats from NYSC officials, who demanded she remove the video and summoned her to appear before a panel for questioning.
In response, Obi condemned the intimidation of citizens who speak truthfully about the nation’s challenges. He emphasized the importance of dialogue and engagement between the government and the people, rather than silencing dissenting voices.
Obi revealed that he, too, has faced threats and harassment for offering constructive criticism and solutions to government policies. He described the actions against Raye as unethical and urged the current administration to embrace constructive criticism as a vital tool for good governance.
The former governor called on Nigerians to remain courageous in speaking out against misgovernance, injustice, and intimidation. He encouraged citizens to stand firm, support one another, and continue advocating for a Nigeria where freedom of speech is respected, and leaders are held accountable.
“A just and prosperous Nigeria should be one where people like Raye are encouraged to speak out about the challenges they face, while those in government take urgent action to address these issues,” Obi stated. He stressed that the nation’s future depends on collective efforts to demand accountability, particularly in critical areas such as education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.
