SDP Youth Coalition Rejects El-Rufai’s Defection, Citing Anti-Democratic Record

A coalition of youths within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has opposed the defection of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, accusing him of anti-democratic tendencies and a lack of inclusivity.
In a statement issued on Friday by the group’s leader, Comrade Abdulsamad Bello, the coalition described El-Rufai as “unfit and morally unqualified” to join the party.
The group warned that El-Rufai’s presence could destabilize the SDP, citing his tenure as governor, which they claimed was marked by authoritarianism, suppression of opposition voices, and impunity.
They also criticized the party’s leadership for allegedly facilitating a “clandestine deal” to enable his entry.
The coalition highlighted recent demonstrations by El-Rufai’s supporters at the SDP national headquarters in Abuja, where they demanded the resignation of the party’s national secretary, Olu Agunloye, as evidence of his attempt to take control of the party.
The youth group accused El-Rufai of using the SDP as a platform to advance his political ambitions following his fallout with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu.
They dismissed his defection as a calculated move to remain politically relevant, labeling his past criticisms of opposition leaders as hypocritical.
El-Rufai recently left the APC after publicly criticizing the party and engaging with opposition figures.
The SDP youth coalition has vowed to resist his influence, emphasizing the need to protect the party’s democratic values and integrity.
