At least two people have died following a gas explosion near the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Tuesday night.

The incident, which occurred around 8:00 p.m., caused extensive damage, destroying four buildings and 15 vehicles, including tricycles.

The explosion was triggered when an articulated gas tanker lost control while attempting to ascend the link road to the expressway.

The vehicle overturned, spilling its gas contents onto the road, which ignited immediately, causing a massive fire that quickly spread to nearby structures and vehicles.

Emergency responders have recovered two bodies, but officials fear the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue.

A nearby private hospital was also affected, though details about potential victims inside remain unclear. Authorities have yet to identify the make and registration number of the tanker involved in the incident.

According to a police report, the fire broke out after the tanker overturned and spilled its contents, leading to an immediate explosion.

The inferno destroyed four buildings, 15 vehicles, an unspecified number of shops, and household properties. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and further details are expected as the situation develops.
