FEC Approves N10.3bn for HIV, Diabetes, Health Commodities
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved approximately N10.3 billion for the procurement of antiretroviral drugs for HIV treatment, diabetes diagnostic kits, and other essential health commodities. The move aims to improve the accessibility and affordability of healthcare services for Nigerians.
Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Pate, disclosed this during a briefing with State House correspondents. He explained that the approval includes N997 million for third-line antiretroviral drugs to support HIV patients, emphasizing the importance of domestic financing amid global health funding changes.
Pate also highlighted the procurement of locally manufactured diabetes diagnostic kits, addressing the growing prevalence of diabetes in Nigeria. A Lagos-based private company has been commissioned to produce the kits, aligning with the government’s efforts to boost local manufacturing and unlock the healthcare value chain.
The minister noted that monitoring devices will be distributed across primary healthcare centres, and health workers will be trained to assist patients in managing their blood sugar levels. Additionally, N4.5 billion has been allocated for antibiotics, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic medications to reduce the cost of essential drugs.
In a related development, N2.1 billion was approved for the procurement of a mobile X-ray machine and the rehabilitation of a 64-slice CT scan facility at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi. This upgrade is expected to enhance diagnostic and clinical care services, positioning the hospital as a referral centre for Bauchi State and the surrounding region
