Senate Suspends Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for Six Months

The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following her dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The suspension stems from her alleged violation of the Senate Standing Rules (2023 as amended) and for bringing the Senate and its presiding officer into disrepute.
Senate President Akpabio announced the decision while presenting the recommendations of the Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Code of Conduct, which investigated her claims of sexual harassment.
Despite attempts by some senators to reduce the suspension to three months, the majority upheld the initial six-month penalty.
However, the Senate indicated that the suspension could be lifted or shortened if Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan submits a written apology.
Akpabio stated, “For the Senate to consider lifting this suspension or reducing its duration, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan must submit a written apology to the Senate before her case is reconsidered.”
After the ruling, the Kogi Central lawmaker was escorted out of the chamber by the Sergeant-At-Arms. Before leaving, she firmly declared, “This injustice will not be sustained.”
