Court Halts Senate’s Public Hearing on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Misconduct Allegations

The Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an interim injunction preventing the Senate from proceeding with its scheduled public hearing regarding the alleged misconduct of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The hearing, initially set for Wednesday, March 5, was intended to address her conduct during a Senate session the previous week, where she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of victimizing her by reallocating her seat.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan further escalated the situation by accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment, reigniting discussions about the ongoing conflict between the two.
Justice Obiora Egwuatu, who granted the injunction, also ordered the National Assembly, the Senate, and the Senate Committee on Ethics to suspend the hearing.
The court has given the defendants—including the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the Senate, and the Committee on Ethics—72 hours to provide reasons why an interlocutory injunction to halt the hearing should not be issued.
The Senate is expected to challenge the court order, arguing that the judiciary is overstepping by interfering with the legislative branch’s functions.
