Former President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed why his administration did not implement the recommendations of the 2014 National Conference.

He made the explanation on Sunday while joining former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to pay a condolence visit to the family of the late Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, in Lagos.

Jonathan attributed the delay to the intense political turbulence in Nigeria at the time, which he said made it difficult to present the conference’s recommendations.

He praised Adebanjo, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96, for his significant contributions to the 2014 National Conference, stating that the event would not have been possible without his input.

Addressing questions about why the recommendations were not implemented, Jonathan emphasized that many Nigerians were unaware of the political instability during his tenure.

He described Adebanjo as a leader who always sought the best for Nigeria and commended his exemplary leadership of Afenifere.

Atiku Abubakar also paid tribute to Adebanjo, describing him as a great leader whose death was a significant loss to his family and admirers.

He recalled the virtues Adebanjo stood for and expressed gratitude for his guidance and contributions to Nigeria’s unity and peaceful coexistence.

Atiku extended his condolences to the family, acknowledging Adebanjo’s role as a father figure and mentor.

Later in the evening, Atiku, Jonathan, and other PDP leaders, including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, attended a dinner hosted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo at The Delborough Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was attended by numerous dignitaries, honoring the legacy of the late Afenifere leader.
