Moon Sighted in Saudi Arabia, Ramadan Begins March 1

Saudi Arabia has officially declared that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, following the sighting of the Ramadan crescent moon in the Kingdom. The announcement aligns with similar declarations from countries such as Qatar and Oman, while Nigerian Muslims await confirmation from their religious leaders.
As the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan holds profound spiritual significance, particularly in Saudi Arabia, home to Islam’s holiest sites. During this time, millions of worshippers flock to the Grand Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina for prayers and reflection. Families gather to enjoy traditional dishes like samboosas and Arabic coffee (qahwa), while businesses adapt their operations to accommodate fasting and spiritual practices.
To support those observing Ramadan, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD) has introduced revised working hours for both public and private sectors. These adjustments aim to help employees balance their religious, personal, and professional commitments during the holy month. Public sector employees will follow reduced working hours, while private sector workers will also benefit from modified schedules. The banking sector, however, will maintain its usual reduced-hour schedule to ensure essential financial services remain accessible.
Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, prayer, and community, and the Kingdom’s work hour adjustments reflect its commitment to supporting employees in fulfilling their religious obligations while maintaining productivity. Employers are encouraged to comply with official directives and may introduce flexible work arrangements, remote work options, and wellness initiatives to further assist their workforce.
By fostering a harmonious balance between professional and personal life, Saudi Arabia underscores its dedication to employee well-being and the cultural and spiritual significance of Ramadan.
