Sultan Calls for Moon Sighting to Mark Start of Ramadan 2025

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to begin searching for the new moon of Ramadan on Friday, February 28, 2025.
This announcement was made in a statement issued by the Sultanate Council of Sokoto, delivered by Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Islamic Religious Affairs.
The statement highlighted the significance of moon sighting in determining the start of Ramadan, urging Muslims who sight the crescent moon to report their observations to the nearest district or village head.
These reports will then be communicated to the Sultan. The date corresponds to the 29th of Sha’aban 1446 AH in the Islamic calendar.
The Sultanate Council emphasized that the monthly observation of the moon is essential for maintaining accuracy in the Islamic lunar calendar and ensuring a unified declaration of Ramadan’s commencement across Nigeria.
The sighting of the moon will officially signal the beginning of the holy month, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk, engage in increased prayers, and perform acts of charity.
As the spiritual leader of Nigerian Muslims, the Sultan has consistently encouraged the faithful to actively participate in the moon-sighting exercise and promptly report their findings to ensure a harmonious start to Ramadan.
