Babangida Reveals Details of 1985 Vatsa Coup Plot in New Autobiography

In his newly launched autobiography, *A Journey in Service*, former military President General Ibrahim Babangida has provided a detailed account of the 1985 coup plot led by his childhood friend, General Mamman Jiya Vatsa. The book, unveiled on Thursday, 20 February 2025, in Abuja, sheds light on the events surrounding the failed coup, including plans to blow up Eko Bridge in Lagos and potentially hijack the presidential jet to assassinate Babangida.
On pages 207-211, Babangida recalls how initial rumors of Vatsa’s involvement in the coup were dismissed but later confirmed by “incontrovertible evidence.” He described confronting Vatsa after reporting the rumors to senior colleagues, including Generals Nasko, Garba Duba, and Wushishi. Despite Vatsa’s denial, investigations revealed his role in funding officers to facilitate the plot, including Lt-Col Musa Bitiyong, who received ₦50,000 under the guise of a farm project.
Reflecting on their close friendship, Babangida expressed shock and sadness over Vatsa’s involvement, stating, “I was somewhat depressed to watch him die in such circumstances.” However, he defended the decision to execute Vatsa, emphasizing that national security took precedence over personal ties.
