Eleven years ago today, a dark cloud fell upon us with the tragic loss of a remarkable journalist and leader, Editor Toyin Obadina. His dedication, kindness, and professionalism left an indelible mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

During my time at Daily Newswatch, I often shared rides home with him whenever I wasn’t driving. That fateful evening, as I waited for him to wrap up work, he turned to me and said, “Sokoya, are you sure you’ll be able to join me this evening? I might be leaving around 11 p.m. o.” For some reason, an unease settled in my heart, and I chose to head to Ikeja instead of Ikorodu with him.

That night, armed robbers struck. They attacked him at close range, and though he was rushed to LASUTH, he succumbed to his injuries. The following morning remains one of the most harrowing moments of my life—I collapsed upon seeing his lifeless body being moved to the mortuary. A haunting thought gripped me: I could have been in that car with him. But in the midst of sorrow, I remain grateful for divine grace.

Editor Toyin Obadina was more than a boss; he was a mentor, a guide, and an inspiration. His humility, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to journalism will never be forgotten.

Continue to rest in the bosom of the Almighty, sir. Your legacy lives on in the hearts of those you touched.
