NLC suspends action on 50% tariff increase, awaits 10-man review committee

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, will wait for the report of a 10-man joint committee contituted with the Federal Government.

The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, stated this at the end of talks with a high-powered team of the Federal Government and the NLC aimed at reaching agreement on the contentious 50 percent increase of the telecommunication tariff by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC).

Specifically, Ajaero said the NLC will wait for the outcome of the Committee to determine its next line of action.

the A high-powered team of the Federal Government is in talks with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in order to reach agreement on the contentious 50 percent increase of the telecommunication tariff by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC).

Indeed, the meeting between the Federal Government and the NLC was at the instance of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, OSGF.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Director, Information & Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, OSGF, Segun Imohiosen, on Monday.

The statement said the meeting was called by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, in order to ensure industrial harmony, especially in the sector of the economy, and also protect the overall interest of Nigerians.

According to the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who spoke on behalf of the Federal Government, the purpose of the meeting was to look into the study carried out by the NCC which led to the 50 percent increase of telecommunications tariff.

At the end of their extensive deliberation, the two bodies agreed to set up a 10-man Committee comprising five members from the Federal Government and five from the NLC to review the study by NCC and submit its report within two weeks.

The minister said, “So, the summary of it is that Labour and the Nigerian Labour Congress specifically and the delegation of the federal government have set up a committee of five each.

“We are going to meet here continuously for the next two weeks. And at the end of the second week, we will now come up with a recommendation that we will give to government and the organised Labour for final consideration.”

Also, the NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, said it will wait for the outcome of the Committee to determine its next line of action.

In attendance at the high-powered meeting were Minister Communication and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijanni, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, Minister of Labour and Employment, Alhaji Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu among others.
