Nigeria Boosts Refining Capacity with New 10,000bpd Refinery in Delta
The Federal Government has approved the construction of a new 10,000 barrels per day refinery in Delta State, further expanding Nigeria’s refining capacity.
The approval was granted to MRO Energy Limited, an energy company, for the construction of the refinery at Imode In Ughelli, Delta State.
This development comes on the heels of a licence issued two months ago to Process Design and Development Limited for a 27,000 barrels per day refinery in Gombe State.
With this addition, Nigeria now has approximately 11 modular and conventional refineries, contributing to the nation’s overall refining capacity.
The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria has also announced plans to construct a new refinery with an initial capacity of 50,000 barrels per day.
Despite the growing number of refineries, many remain underutilised or non-operational, with most failing to operate at optimal capacity.
The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has set a domestic refining target of 770,500 barrels of oil per day for local refineries.
This move is expected to boost Nigeria’s refining capacity and reduce reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
