The Eagle Square, Abuja, was sombre on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, as Vice President Kashim Shettima leads other Nigerians to pay tribute to the patriotism and sacrifices of the nation’s fallen heroes during the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

At 64 years post-independence, the nation’s existence continues to be safeguarded by the ultimate sacrifices of countless gallant troops who defended its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, led the ceremony, as the President attended the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the UAE. Other dignitaries, including cabinet members, service chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, participated in the wreath-laying and military rituals, including a gun salute.

The event was also attended by senators, military families, widows of fallen officers, members of the diplomatic corps, and senior government officials.

In a preceding statement, the Senate lauded the selfless dedication of military personnel, commending both the fallen heroes and the serving officers who continue to safeguard the nation’s peace and security against internal and external threats.
