Nigerian Telecom Operators Propose 100% Tariff Hike Amid Rising Costs
Nigerian telecommunications companies have proposed a 100% increase in service tariffs to address rising operational costs, pending approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
Karl Toriola, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, disclosed the proposal during an interview on Arise TV.
He stated that the tariff hike is essential for the sector’s sustainability, citing inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and rising energy prices as key challenges.
“We’ve submitted a request for approximately 100% tariff increases to the regulators. However, I doubt they’ll approve that level of adjustment due to the sensitive economic situation,” Toriola explained.
Despite uncertainty surrounding the NCC’s decision, Toriola expressed optimism that regulators would act in the industry’s best interest.
He emphasized the importance of balancing short-term consumer affordability with long-term industry sustainability.
The Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, described the telecom sector as “under siege,” warning of potential service disruptions unless tariffs are adjusted. Rising inflation, volatile exchange rates, and increasing energy costs have strained operators’ ability to maintain service quality and expand networks.
ALTON and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria have urged the Federal Government to initiate dialogue with stakeholders to develop a framework that balances consumer affordability and operators’ financial health.
Operators caution that without swift action, the telecom sector’s survival and the broader economy could face severe consequences.
