My Cabinet is Efficient, No Need for Downsizing – Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu on Monday dismissed claims from critics suggesting that his cabinet is “bloated,” asserting that he has no intention of reducing the size of his 48-member team.
Speaking during his first presidential media chat aired on NTA from his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi, Lagos State, Tinubu firmly stated, “I am not ready to shrink.”
He emphasized that “efficiency” was the guiding principle behind his selection of ministers, adding that he stands by his decisions.
The President also reiterated his stance on the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, stating that Nigeria could no longer afford to play “Father Christmas” to its neighboring countries.
“I have no regrets whatsoever about removing the petrol subsidy. We were mortgaging our future and deceiving ourselves. That reform was absolutely necessary,” he said.
Tinubu explained that the swift removal of the subsidy was essential to safeguarding Nigeria’s future and that of generations to come.
When asked whether the removal of the subsidy and the floating of the naira should have been phased, Tinubu responded: “Why sustain an expense when you lack the revenue to cover it? I refuse to support individuals driving limousines at our expense.”
He further emphasized the importance of financial discipline, saying, “We must instill proper management principles in all aspects of governance. We cannot continue to give away fuel and act as Father Christmas to our neighboring countries. I stand by my decision with no regrets.”
