Sports Minister affirms position, orders NFF to employ competent foreign coach for Super Eagles
The Minister of Sports, John Enoh, has directed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to employ a foreign coach for the Super Eagles.
John Enoh, who said such a foreign coach must be one which will make every Nigerian proud, told the NFF to make sure the future coach of the Super Eagles possesses the background necessary to earn the respect of the players on the national team.
The sports minister also urged the NFF to name a top-tier coach for the Super Eagles amid their difficult 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification process in an interview with Eagle7 FM.
“The Super Eagles need a coach with pedigree and a track record of achievements. We need someone who can propel us towards winning the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and ensure our qualification for the 2026 World Cup.”
“It has to be a name that will inspire the spirit of our nation.
“He has to be a first-class coach with a track record, a pedigree, who will earn the respect of our players,” he said.
Only two weeks ago, Finidi George stepped down as the coach of the Super Eagles following poor results in the 2026 World Cup qualifying games against South Africa and Benin Republic.
The coach decided to step down after the NFF announced plans to hire a foreign technical adviser.
The resignation of Finidi, who made his debut for Nigeria in 1991, in an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Burkina Faso, was confirmed by former Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on his X account.
