Super Eagles coaching job? Not for me – ex-Real Madrid midfielder Mutiu Adepoju
Former Super Eagles and Real Madrid midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has dismissed as untrue a claim that he applied for the job of the national senior team of Nigeria.
News was rife in the media stating that Mutiu was interested in the Super Eagles job following the resignation of George Finidi as manager of the Super Eagles.
According to Mutiu, “We had several players in the Castilla team who are brilliant coaches today, and we didn’t see it at the time. I have a UEFA Pro license myself, so if there’s an opportunity, I wouldn’t mind.
“I’m open. I once coached Shooting Stars in Nigeria, but I haven’t coached since then.”
Adepoju, who spoke to the Managing Madrid Podcast, who holds a UEFA Pro coaching license, that he never applied for the Super Eagles job as widely reported.
The former Nigerian international, who spoke with Nigeria Info FM Abuja, stated that he will only back calls for an indigenous coach to lead the Super Eagles. He said he has no plans to take on the role.
“I never spoke about the Super Eagles’ appointment. I never applied, and I am sure the NFF did not mention my name.
“I already supported calls for an Indigenous coach for the job. I was happy to hear that Amokachi, Finidi, and Amuneke applied. The NFF then announced their choice.
“Will I then go behind them and apply in secret?” Adepoju, who is now an ambassador of the Spanish Liga in Nigeria, pondered.
“I was just looking at my time in Spain, with Castella and Real Madrid.
“I spoke about it on my X handle. It was just about how I got to Spain, but nothing about the Super Eagles. I don’t know where they got their story from,” he said.
