NCC identifies causes of fast data depletion, absolves telcos
The Nigerian Communications Commission NCC has identified causes rapid depletion of subscribers’ data to include automatic updates, location services and other related background apps.
Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida, who recently spoke on the issue, absolved the telecom companies (Telcos) of blame.
Maida also said depletion of data could also be csused by running advertisements, roaming, malware, and excessive usage.
He, however, assured that the Commission has embarked on consultations to evolve a process that would simplify tariff plans and provide enhanced transparency to the consumer.
According to him, the Commission provided practical solutions that could enable the customers preserve their data, including data usage monitoring, disabling background data and automatic updates and using ad-blockers.
He said the commission also advised customers to connect to Wi-Fi networks when possible and upgrade to larger data plans for heavy users.
In the same vein, the Commission has directed Mobile Network Operators to audit their billing systems.
It.has also evolved a process that would enthrone a regime of improved transparency by simplifying tariff plans for the customers.
