Finidi George resigns as Super Eagles coach

Finidi George’s journey as manager of the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, is now short live as he resigned only after a few months in the saddle.
Finidi George, who confirmed his resignation to newsmen, on Saturday, threw in the towel after a poor run of games in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with the national senior team.
Responding to questions, he stated, “Yes, it is true. I have resigned,” even though the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not reacted to this position.
Finidi George was manager of the Super Eagles when the team drew 1-1 against South Africa at home in Uyo and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic in Abidjan, putting Nigeria’s qualification to the World Cup in a difficult situation.
There was serious hope that the former Nigerian international would do well with the senior national team having successfully coached Eyimba of Aba and served as assistant to former coach if the team, Jose Peseiro.
However, Nigeria is now 5th above only Zimbabwe in the Group C qualification, in a precarious situation on its way to the 2026 World Cup.
Indeed, the NFF and the Sports Minister had an emergency meeting with George after the South Africa and Benin Republic games because of the poor results and faced with a possibility of not qualifying for another World Cup after the failure of Qatar 2022.
A fallout of the meeting was a decision to hire a technical adviser for the team, while Finidi George operates under him.
