The echoes of colonialism still reverberate in the boundaries of Cross River State, where ancient mapping by the colonial masters has left a legacy of conflict and unrest.

The Cross River State government’s recent call to the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to revisit these historical boundaries marks a pivotal moment in the state’s quest for peace and resolution of long-standing disputes.

It is against this background that the recent parley between the state government, represented by the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey (PhD) and the National Boundary Commission, led also by its Director-Genetal, Adamu Adaji, can better be appreciated from the perspectives of the inherited colonial legacy- the challenges faced by the NBC, and the collaborative efforts between the state government and the NBC to redefine boundaries and foster lasting peace in the region.

The colonial mapping of boundaries in Africa was often driven by economic interests rather than the well-being of the indigenous populations.

Gleaned from the bruises, casualties and displacement Cross River has suffered, the government believes that the boundaries delineated by the colonial masters are the causative factors in the unremitting conflicts and unrest, as they do not accurately reflect the needs and interests of the people.

By calling for a revisit of these boundaries, therefore, the state government aims to rectify historical injustices and pave the way for peaceful coexistence among communities.

The meeting between the state government and the NBC, was a crucial step in this process. In their submissions, Hon. Peter Odey, and chairman of the State Boundary Committee, emphasized the need for new mapping instruments and strategies to benefit Cross River State and prevent the outbreak of wars and destruction of lives and property.

Odey’s presentation of the issues surrounding the Cross River sector of the Nigerian-Cameroon international boundary and inter-state boundary disputes underscored the complexity of the challenges faced by the state.

Surveyor Adamu Adaji, in his remarks, highlighted the obstacles encountered by the NBC in resolving boundary disputes. The increasing quest for land, water, and grazing rights, exacerbated by demographic and climate changes, has further complicated the boundary delineation process.

Additionally, the negative influence of the political class and elite, as well as vague and imprecise boundary instruments, have hindered the NBC’s efforts to establish clear and demarcated boundaries. Adamu’s appeal to the state government for support underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing these challenges.

The collaborative approach between the Cross River State government and the NBC is essential in resolving boundary disputes and promoting peace in the region. By revisiting colonial mapping, developing new mapping instruments, and actively engaging with stakeholders, the state government and the NBC can ensure that boundaries are accurately defined and demarcated. This, in turn, will lead to a more peaceful and prosperous future for the people of Cross River State, free from the specter of historical injustices and ongoing conflicts.

Significantly, the quest for peaceful boundaries in Cross River State is a testament to the resilience and determination of the state government and its people.

By unraveling the legacy of colonial mapping and forging new paths towards peace and cooperation, Cross River State can overcome its historical challenges and embrace a future defined by unity and prosperity.

The collaborative efforts between the state government and the NBC serve are a beacon of hope for other regions grappling with boundary disputes, showcasing the power of dialogue, cooperation, and collective action in building a better tomorrow.
