A grant of USD 3.4 million has been given to d.light, a company that offers low-income households cheap financing and household items.

Douglas Gavala, the Managing Director for Uganda at d.light confirmed the funding and investment plans in a statement.

In addition to financing solar home systems and associated aspirational products like televisions and cellphones, d.light offers a wide range of sustainable options to its customers.

The Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU) and Energising Development (EnDev)

PSFU is an organisation made up of public sector agencies, businesses, and business associations while EnDev is an international partnership that the governments of Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland facilitate to provide access to affordable, dependable, and sustainable energy sources to improve social, economic, and environmental conditions.

D.light is carrying out a project that provides refugees who were driven out by violence in South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo and are currently living in camps in Northern and Western Uganda with affordable solar house systems.

This project is a component of a larger initiative to provide 23,000 solar-powered homes.

With the funding, the solar company said it will be able to give people access to reasonably priced, dependable, sustainable energy to bring about social, economic, and environmental transformation.

Douglas while expressing his enthusiasm for the project, said, “This grant allows us to expand our work and significantly improve the lives of refugees in Uganda.”

Indications are that the project is organised around a results-based finance approach and is planned to run on a 12-month schedule. This implies that d.light won’t get paid until the solar systems have been installed and are running smoothly.

Earlier report stated that MNZL, a financial firm based in Egypt, has announced securing a $3.5 million Seed funding round to improve technology infrastructure and expand its market footprint in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.
