Flashback: Rivers CP Tunde Disu visits 94-year-old retired DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga

Few days ago, the ebullient and hardworking Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Tunji Disu, visited DCP Dame Stella Obuoforibo Okuyiga (Rtd.) in Rivers State.

The 94-year-old female Police veteran was one of the first twenty female officers enlisted in 1955.

This unique and singular act of CP Disu has been commended in several quarters as the first senior officer to visit Mama.

Highly placed sources within the Police hierarchy indicated that her case was equally unique because she was a victim of professional competence in which case she was forced out of service because she arrested a then serving Judge who broke traffic laws and insisted he must be prosecuted.

This amazon stood her ground even when the then Supreme Military Council under General Olusegun Obasanjo intervened with a threat of dismissal.

When the SMC decided she should be dismissed without benefits, the then IGP Adamu Suleiman pleaded for her and she was asked to resign so as to save her years of meritorious service to fatherland. And she promptly did.

One wonders why this incorruptible woman of valour and strength hasn’t been duly recognised and celebrated in our country or even nominated for national honours.
