AFCON: Nigeria gets clean bill of health, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal sanctioned

Nigeria and Super Eagles players were given a clean bill of health of any wrongdoing during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) at the weekend.
The Super Eagles reached the final of the tournament, losing 2-1 to Ivory Coast. They were initially touted to win the tournament.
CAF’s investigations, on the other hand, found AFCON winners Ivory Coast, Senegal and Mali culpable and were sanctioned by the CAF Disciplinary Board.
The Board, which was convened to deliberate on different matters and issues raised during the football fiesta, found Ivory Coast and Mali guilty of infractions during their knockout clash on February 3, 2024, and were sanctioned.
Specifically, Mali faced charges of misconduct because of unsporting behavior of their players towards the match officials.
In a post on CAF’s official website, Hamari Traore, in particular, was found guilty of unsporting conduct and received a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended for one year.
Also, Mali incurred a fine of 10,000 US Dollars.
For Senegal’s Krepin Diatta, he was charged with bringing CAF into disrepute following comments made after the match between his team and Ivory Coast played on 29 January 2024.
Diatta was found guilty and suspended four matches, two of which are for a period of one year.
He was also fined 10,000 US Dollars, while Senegal was also charged with team’s misconduct and fined 5,000 US Dollars.
