The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) is said to have fixed Saturday, September 16 as the date to deliver its much-expected final ruling on the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

The cases were filed by the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his People’s Democratic Party, PDP, counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, are against Bola Ahmed Tinubu as winner of the 2023 presidential election.

The Tribunal, according to the Constitution, has up till September 16, 2023 ( which is a maximum of 180 days of filing of Petitions) to deliver judgment on the petitions challenging the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu who was the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the February 25 general  elections.

Although the September 16 could not be confirmed authoritatively, the reasoning is based on the constitutional provision.

However, after adopting the final written addresses of the parties involved in the suit, the five-man tribunal headed by Justice Haruna Simon Tsamani reserved judgment and said a date to deliver the verdict would be communicated to concerned parties and their lawyers.

September 16 remains the final date available for the tribunal to deliver its judgment on the three petitions instituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Labour Party (LP), and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) together with their presidential candidates, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi, and Princess Chichi Ojei, respectively.

The defendants in the cases are Bola Tinubu, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Though the tribunal is yet to make an official statement on the date to deliver its ruling, it is bound by constitutional stipulation not to exceed September 16…besides the suspicion that it might have decided to fix the final day to make its ruling, with a view to crossing all the Ts’ and dotting all the Is’.
