Qatar World Cup: England’s left-back could be their undoing – Wayne Rooney
Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney, has identified England’s major weak point, saying their left-back could be their undoing.
This year’s World Cup will commence on Sunday, with the host nation Qatar facing Ecuador and England facing Iran on Monday in their opener.
England are in Group B at the tournament alongside Iran, Wales and USA.
But Rooney, who said England have one of the best squads at the World Cup, admitted that their centre-backs could cost them during the tournament.
According to him, other countries have stronger centre-backs than the Three Lions.
“England have one of, if not the strongest squads. Full backs, midfielders, attacking players — there is strength right across the board,” Rooney told The Times.
“The only area that is not as strong as some of the other nations is the centre backs.
“Previously, we’ve had the likes of Rio Ferdinand and John Terry, who were world-class.
“When you look at Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka, we have got to choose from, it’s as good as we have had.”
