The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Sen Iyorchia Ayu, has been asked to nominate the lawmaker representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, as the Minority Leader in the upper legislative chamber.

The request, which was made by the South-East caucus in the Senate, followed the resignation of Enyinnaya Abaribe, Senator representing Abia South.

The lawmaker announced his resignation after withdrawing from the PDP governorship primary in Abia State over alleged irregularities among party stakeholders.

A letter dated June 1 and jointly issued by Chimaroke Nnamani, Theodore Orji, Sam Egwu, Oyenwuchi Francis, Ike Ekweremadu, Obinna Ogba, Michael Nnachi and Chukwuka Utazi to Ayu, senators from the Southeast said they want Ekwunife to replace Abaribe.

The letter reads in part, “Following the resignation of our senate minority leader, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia) from the PDP last week, we the underlisted PDP Senators of the south-east zone hereby nominate Distinguished Senator Uche Lilian Ekwunife as a replacement for Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as the position was zoned to the South East”.
