Presidency mocks Atiku as Babachir quits ADC

The Presidency has mocked the former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, over the exit of Babachir Lawal from the African Democratic Congress, ADC, alleging rigging of primary in favour of Atiku.

President Bola Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, mocked Atiku, suggesting he would retire to Dubai.

Former SGF Babachir David Lawal resigned from the ADC, accusing the party of rigging its presidential primary in favor of ex-Vice President Abubakar.

Describing the process as a “disgraceful charade,” Lawal said he would not be part of Atiku’s “rigging machine” ahead of the 2027 elections. He also announced a step back from active politics, planning to return to his village farm.

Lawal’s resignation follows Atiku’s controversial victory over Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the ADC primary, which both runners-up also rejected. Despite the turmoil, Atiku has since met with Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen in an effort to reconcile.
